Sambisari Temple


Sambisari Temple is one of the relics of the heyday of Hindu temples in Java, which is administratitf land located in the district of Sleman, Yogyakarta Special Province (DIY). Syiwaistis wing Temple which was built in the X century by the House of dynasty in 1966 was discovered accidentally by a farmer from the village named Karyoniangun Sambisari while hoeing in his field.

Based on geological studies of the temple of rock and soil that has been hoard it for hundreds of years, the temple is estimated as high as 7.5 m of material were buried by the massive eruption of Mount Merapi in 1006 AD Furthermore, the results of excavations conducted in July 1966, obtained the assurance that the area is indeed is a temple site. At the time of excavation was also found in other historic objects, such as jewelry, pottery, and inscriptions made of gold plate. According to the diggers, the findings indicate that Sambisari temple was built around 812-838 AD when Hindu Kingdom of Mataram (Mataram Kuno), led by King Rakai Garung. After the excavation is completed, began the process of realignment of the parts of the temple which was scattered. Since then, the temple site is designated as a cultural reserves.
In 1987, the Yogyakarta Archaeological Center conduct the restoration and reconstruction of the temple complex. From the reconstruction process, obtained the assurance that the position of the temple located at a depth of 6.5 meters from ground level. Because of its position under the soil surface, by the people around, Sambisari later referred to as the underground temple.

Compared to the Hindu temple in the land-cand other Javanese, Sambisari has its own uniqueness, which lies below ground as deep as 6.5 m. Thus, when visitors view it from the side, this temple as if emerging from underground.
In terms of architecture, this temple also has the features that can be seen from the parts that make up the whole temple complex. The main part of this temple has a height of 7.5 m, a square measuring 15.6 x 13.6 m. According to the Yogyakarta Archaeological Center, Sambisari temple complex is estimated larger than that size if it is done further excavation. But if carried out excavations again, it is feared the temple will be inundated by water when the rainy season, because its position is lower than the river, located on the west.

For visitors wishing to enter the main building, can be contained to the entrance on the west side of the main building. During the climb the stairs to the entrance, visitors will encounter a unique ornament in the form of wing found on the stairs. At the end of the wing these steps, there is a relief Makara supported by two statues of dwarf-like creatures. Another uniqueness of this temple is not a pillar, so that the base also functions as a supporting pillar. In this section there are corridors that surround the body temple and has 12 steps.

In the outer body of the main building of the temple, visitors can find niches as a place to put the statue. Visitors can see the statue of Goddess Durga in the north, the statue of Ganesha on the east side, and a statue of Agastya in the south. Two other niches that are on the right and left door, is where the statue of the god of porter, which Mahakala and Nadisywara. Visitors can also see the statue of Yoni and Linga that are large in a chamber in the body temple.

Besides the main temple, the temple complex also has 3 pieces Sambisari chapel or accompanying temple is located in front of the main temple. Chapel has an area of 4.8 square meters and 5 meters high. While the exterior of the building of the temple, visitors can find a wall made of white stone with a size of 50 mx 48 m that surrounds the temple building.

Sambisari is administratively located in the hamlet Sambisari, Purwomartani Village, Kalasan District, Sleman District, Yogyakarta Special Province (DIY), Indonesia. To enter the temple complex Sambisari, visitors free of charge is very cheap, at only Rp 500 per person (2008). To reach the temple site located about 12 km to the east of the city of Yogyakarta, or 5 km from the Prambanan temple, can be reached by bus Yogya-Solo majors until mile 10 where there are signposts the way to the temple.
